Amitav Ghosh was born in Calcutta, grew up in India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka; and studied in Delhi, Oxford, and Alexandria. His work has been translated into more than 30 languages. His essays have appeared in The New Yorker, The New Republic, and The New York Times. In 2019, Foreign Policy magazine named him one of the most important global thinkers of the preceding decade. He is the first first Indian writer in English to be conferred with the Jnanpith Award (2019). He has also been honoured with Padma Shri (2007) and the Sahitya Akademi award (1990). His novel Gun Island (2019) has recently been translated into Hindi, Malayalam, and Marathi.
