Kadem Sammaiah

Kadem Sammaiah (from Narayanapuram village, Venkatapuram mandal, Bhupalapally district) is an outstanding Mandeccula artiste who can hold the audience riveted with his terrific histrionics and body language. His troupe holds an impressive collection of very brightly coloured and decorated wooden idols (made by Nakkashi artistes of Cheriyal)—of one and one and a half feet height and sixty of them—representing different characters in the Golla Rajula cycle of tales. The dolls are used as visual aids by the lead artistes during the performance. The manner in which Sammaiah picks up a doll and turns it in his hands is a sight to behold.
