Ashok Vajpeyi, a Hindi poet-critic, translator, editor and culture-activist, is a major cultural figure of India. Among his publications are 14 books of poetry, 10 of criticism in Hindi, and four on art in English, two on the Paris-based Indian master Sayed Haider Raza, one on seven contemporary Indian abstract painters, and one on Hindustani classical. He has been awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award, the Dayawati Kavi Shekhar Samman, Kabir Samman, honoured with D.Lit. (honoriscausa) by the Central University of Hyderabad, decorated by the President of Republic of Poland with ‘The Officer’s Cross of Merit of the Republic of Poland’, and by the French Govt. with ‘Officier De L’Ordre Des Arts Et Des Lettres’.
